A Look At Torqueedo Motors

If you've been shopping for electric outboard motors, then chances are you've heard the name Torqueedo thrown around here and there. Torqueedo motors are amongst the more popular brands for electric motors for boats whether trolling or otherwise. Are they really everything that their reputation suggests, though? Here are just a few of the things that add up to make Torqueedo one of the most popular brands of trolling motors.

Convenient Size

The Torqueedo torque motor is surprisingly small. This is good because when it comes to a torque motor, efficiency is number one. What you want is to create a motor that really makes the maximum possible use of every cubic centimeter of itself. This means that the very best of these motors are typically very small, compact, as they've taken everything they need and shrunk it down to the minimum possible effective size.

Torqueedo sets the bar even higher in this regard, with some of the smallest torque motors in the world. Some of the smallest motors in fact are about the size of a pack of cigarettes (bringing new meaning to the the term cigarette boat, you might say). These tiny electric motors can easily drive rotors the same size you'd usually see on much, much larger combustion engines.

Digital Motors

Torqueedo is interesting in that it is one of the first big motor companies to use the notion of a smart motor, meaning one that can actually calculate and "understand" what is going on, you might say. Many of their models are computerized as such that they can easily compensate for and adjust to the conditions of the waters.

Of course, if you'd rather just have a full manual motor to control, then you can just get one without the "brain" as they call it, and just use an old fashioned Torqueedo. Nevertheless, it's pretty attractive an idea to use a motor that doesn't have you doing everything yourself.

High Thrust

For their size, the thrust you get from these motors is just incredible. Obviously, being able to shrink a motor down to half its size isn't really very impressive if you wind up cutting the power in half as well. Well, that's not what Torqueedo is about. Rather, you get the same power and thrust from a smaller motor than you typically would from one twice as large made by certain other brands.

Thrust is everything for a trolling motor, and this brand knows that, which is why they never sacrifice thrust when designing new models. The performance you get from these motors really is something that has to be experienced to be believed, as it would seem nearly impossible to get such thrust from such a tiny little package.

Really, all it really comes down to is performance, right? In the end, the best performance is what determines the best motors. This is why size matters: a large, heavy motor will weigh you down, it will slow you down, even if it's slightly more powerful than a motor a little smaller in the same range. But a motor that's both incredibly small AND incredibly power is really your best friend in turbulent water.
